Kyle having fun on River Run |
Kyle and I enjoyed a lovely day on River Run in Banff. We camped at Tunnel Mountain campground so our drive to the parking area was about 3 minutes. A short 10 minute approach along the bike trails had us at the base of the route.

Sharp limestone! |
We swung leads and climbed the well bolted sport multi-pitch in 8 pitches (linked pitch 8+9), but could have also linked pitch 3 and 4. The cruxes were pitch 1 (thin slab then a roof move) and pitch 6 (powerful jug pull), but there was always a bolt where you needed it. All the anchors were bolted which made for a quick climb.
Great view of Cascade! |
The route is new but I think it will soon be a rockies classic. Its still pretty prickly on the fingertips and there is a bit of loose rock which will get better with more traffic. Overall, it was a challenging, but very fun day out!
Top of the world! |
The last pitch was really cool climbing up fossils! I didn't stop for a photo unfortunately.
Cruxy pitch 7 (5.10a/b) |
We opted to descend the climbers trail back to the road instead of rappelling, which took about 20 mins. We were up and down with plenty of time to get to our dinner party!
